Cameras and Caliper Services

Expro is one of the market leaders in providing a complete solution for all customers’ well integrity needs using a combination of calipers, logging tools and downhole video cameras. All of these services can be deployed on electric line or slickline to ensure the customer is offered the maximum versatility.

Camera Services

Expro’s range of downhole video camera systems offer operators a cost effective way to ’see’ downhole problems rather than inferring them or just plain guessing. Downhole video is a proven technology and over 5,000 downhole video surveys have been run in a wide range of oil and gas well conditions.

Expro’s market leadership in downhole video is based on technology and service. Our operators are skilled at well preparation to ensure the greatest chance of successful pictures. Patented lighthead design, superior transmission rates and patented lens surfactant ensure that we provide superior picture quality and service. The lens surfactant repels hydrocarbons allowing surveys in flowing wells and entries through oil columns.

Video applications have evolved to provide a cost effective diagnostic and preventative tool that can be run for a multitude of applications.

calvid.jpgCaliper and Video (CalVid)

The Expro CalVid system combines the accuracy of an electronic multi-finger caliper with the visual images of a downhole video camera, resulting in a more accurate representation of wellbore conditions.

Expro’s software package allows visualisation of these complementary data-streams by integrating the digital caliper data with the individual frames from the camera ensuring that the complementary information can be fully utilised.

Caliper tools give accurate measurements of the well bore diameter at the exact arm location, but no feel for the general wellbore condition where the arms are not in contact. A camera gives a good visual representation of the condition of the entire wellbore and in the easiest format to interpret – a picture, but with no measurements. Expro’s combined caliper and video string, CalVid, allows wellbores to be measured and visualised at the same time giving operators a fuller understanding of the wellbore. Critical decisions regarding their well and production integrity can then be made based on a complete, and accurate assessment of the entire wellbore.

Expro’s range of electronic multi-finger caliper tools accurately measure the internal diameter of the casing or tubing strings using up to 40 independent fingers.

Whether used as part of a scheduled casing integrity monitoring program or for a one-off problem investigation, an accurate 3D picture of the downhole conditions can be quickly established at the wellsite using Expro’s Multi-finger Image Processing Software (MIPS). Appropriate remedial action can then be quickly implemented, ensuring that any compromised production time is minimised.

24 arm 1-11/16” tools are available for through tubing work with a maximum range of 4.5”. For larger diameter tubing or casing the 40 arm, 2 ¾” tool will provide readings up to 7.5”.

An internal orientation device continuously records the orientation of the fingers allowing the rotation of the tool to be eliminated from processed data.

All tools can be run in memory mode on slickline.

kinley_mech_cal1.jpgKinley calipers

Kinley calipers have been providing the oil industry with caliper data since 1913. Kinley calipers are 100% mechanical, reducing the cost and making them the only tool available for high temperature work. Kinley calipers are rated to 600°F and 20,000psi.

When the caliper is run in the hole on slickline, the feelers are triggered by upward movement. The data from the feeler arms is scribed on a chrome steel chart which is housed inside the tool. The chart is driven by a drive wheel in contact with the tubing/casing. The chart is then digitised at surface and the data entered into the DigiCal system before being processed by Epidote’s MIPS software.

electronic_calipers.jpgThree types of Kinley caliper are available depending on the application:

  • Baseline Caliper: 15 feeler service for 27/8” to 13 3/8” tubing and casing
  • MegaData Caliper: 30 feeler service for 4½” to 13 3/8” casing
  • Microscopic caliper: 15 or 30 feeler service for 1.9” to 3½” tubing

Calipers can be run in tandem to increase the circumferential coverage as required.
