These systems were originally developed and qualified to withstand flowback operations with high contents of debris (frac proppant). To be able to achieve this, the ball valve operating mechanism has been designed to prevent solids ingress while operating the system. Since the introduction in the field in 2000 the ELSA-HD design has proven to be extremely reliable and durable, therefore maintenance requirements on these systems in between deployments are generally limited.
In addition to the debris tolerance attention was given to reduce operating volumes of the tools enabling these to be functioned with a downhole accumulator, which is a part of any EXPRESS control system. EXPRESS control system compatibility in combination with the limited maintenance requirements of ELSA-HD has made this landing string assembly the choice for batch completions in deep water environments.
The ELSA-HD has completed in excess of 225 completions and interventions since it’s introduction in the field, with one of the highlights being a 140 day extended well test in 2,800 ft of water producing nearly 2MM barrels of oil.
Expro currently operates the ELSA-HD in combination with the EXPRESS-CI subsea control systems in the deep water markets of the Gulf of Mexico and West Africa.
