Our DST track record

Our DST track record

Expro is one of the most experienced international well testing companies in the world and an established provider of Drill Stem Testing (DST) services to the oil and gas industry.

We have vast operational experience with more than 400 DST jobs successfully completed in more than ten international countries, including Brazil, Bolivia, Nigeria, Malaysia and India.

We have also provided DST solutions for some of the world’s major oil and gas producers including Shell, BP, Total, Petrobras, Mobil and Texaco.

The data that we provide throughout every well test allows our customers to plan the optimal exploitation of their reservoirs.

Below is an example of our recent DST work:

Expro’s DST capabilities leads to gas discovery in Egypt

Customer’s problem
Expro’s customer Dana Gas is responsible for South Abu El Naga 2 in Egypt, a gas well with high potential but which had not seen hydrocarbon shows during the drilling phase ever before. Expro was approached to provide a fast and safe method of evaluating the potential of this hydrocarbon show in the extremely shallow Wastani formation, which was only 910 meters deep, under the constraint of a client limitation of 2,000 psi annulus pressure.

Expro’s solution
Based upon a proposed Drill Stem Testing (DST) bottomhole assembly, a generic testing programme was submitted for Dana Gas to review. As part of the programme Expro would provide downhole data from their memory gauges, allowing Dana Gas to determine the potential of the formation. Once they confirmed that they were happy with the proposal the equipment and crew were mobilised to the rig site. Having discussed running procedures and reviewing risk analysis, the first sub-assembly of packer, safety joint and jar was made up onto the TCP assembly and run into the well.

Results
To start the DST, pressure was applied to the annulus to open the pressure operated tester valve, with the tubing pressure immediately rising by 40 psi. After a short clean up flow period, flow rates of 6mm scf/day at 1,250psi were realised. Following a two hour closed-in period to collect the initial formation pressure build-up data, a 32 hour extended flow period was initiated. With the DST back on surface, the memory gauge data for all four gauges was verified and downloaded.

The data delivered from the DST enabled Dana Gas to confirm that they had found another producing zone. Dana announced that they had encountered 16.6 meters of net pay in the South Abu El Naga-2 well and 4.8 meters of net pay in a good quality sandstone reservoir of the El Wastani formation.

Technologies used
Expro’s DST capabilities within Egypt were utilised for this job. A DST bottomhole assembly was delivered to Dana Gas, including a 9 5/8” JS-2A Retrievable Packer, Safety Joint, right hand set Hydraulic Jar, Tubing Tester Valve, Pressure Operated Tester Valve and a Multi-Reverse Spot Tool. Expro’s core DST tools have a track record that has been proven over the past 20 years. The addition of new DST tools means that Expro can provide integrated solutions across the Exploration and Appraisal phase of any well.

Successful exploration and appraisal well test in Latin America

Customer’s challenge
The customer wanted to determine the potential of their hydrocarbon reservoir, establish the permeability of the reservoir and confirm pressure and temperature data. A Drill Stem Test (DST) was selected as preferred option to collect this data.

Expro’s solution
A DST offers the fastest and safest method of evaluating the potential of a newly-discovered hydrocarbon-bearing formation. After the well has been drilled and cased, the first stage of a well test is to run a DST string in conjunction with a downhole data system and tubing conveyed sampling. Following a pre-work meeting, Expro recommended the bottom hole assembly should be used to perform the open hole DST, which included multi-function and single-cycle DST tools and the necessary gauges to collect the data during well testing.

Results
Expro’s downhole tools were able to provide pressure and temperature data to the customer, allowing them to effectively determine the potential of the hydrocarbon-bearing formation. Reservoir pressure was measured up to 10,000 psi, with reservoir temperature measured to 258 °F.

Technologies used
The following DST tools were used by Expro during the test:

  • Pressure Operated Tester Valve (POTV) – an annulus pressure-operated downhole ball valve run with a nitrogen section which compensates for changes in annulus hydrostatic pressures
  • Multi Reverse Spot Tool (MRST) – provides a means of establishing communication between the annulus and the drill string
  • Annulus Operated Reversing Valve (AORV) – a single shot circulating valve giving unrestricted flow between tubing and annulus

Our core DST tools have a track record that has been proven over the past 20 years. The tools have been manufactured with a high content of Monel and CuBr, giving them reliable performance in H2S, CO2 and acid environments with no chromed seal surfaces exposed to well bore fluids in any of the
tools.
